Toranomon-soto Konpira-sha Silver
¥148,500
SOLD OUT
Year: 2023 Medium: Pigmented ink on silver paper Dimension: 30.9 x 21.6 x 0.3 cm / 12.2 x 8.5 x 0.1 in Edition: 8 Signature: Hand-signed by artist, back This work includes a certificate of authenticity, and black frame. Inspired by Hiroshige's "Aoi Slope Outside Toranomon Gate" No.1 13 from "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". In Hiroshige's work, men are depicted worshipping in a loincloth, even on a winter night, for the purpose of praying. This work depicts the "Konpira Shrine" where they end up. The "Toranomon (Tiger's Gate)" was once a particularly important place in Edo Castle, located in the unlucky quarter. Its name is said to derive from its location on the "White Tiger / Byakko" of the four deities that govern the north, south, east, and west of Edo. The Torii gate , which has existed since before it was painted by Hiroshige, is decorated with the sacred birds and animals of the four deities (Blue Dragon / Seiryu, Black Tortoise / Genbu, Vermilion Bird / Suzaku, and White Tiger / Byakko). Even today, the shrine is loved by many people who work in the area, and m any business people visit the shrine to pray.

Studio Ghibli's animated film "Pom Poko (Heisei-era Raccoon Dog War Ponpoko)" (director: Isao Takahata) is based on this theme of the Tama New Town development, and the raccoon depicted in the lower right corner of this work is a reference to a video game character in the animated film.

Inspired by Hiroshige Utagawa This is "Takeshita-dori (Takeshita Street)" in Harajuku, one of the most famous sightseeing spots in contemporary Tokyo. Hiroshige painted 118 famous places in Edo at that time, and if he had to choose 118 famous places in contemporary Tokyo, this street would definitely be chosen. The building depicted at the end of the street is a tower building built on the site of the former "Palais France". The Palais France was a fashion building that opened in 1974 and is said to be the beginning of Takeshita-dori shopping street. Although there was no direct relationship with France, the longing for the glamorous French fashion world has continued in the bustle of Takeshita-dori to the present day.

Inspired by Hiroshige Utagawa The title means "(close view) (O) Daiba (more) (distant view) Oi (pier) (facing)". The full-scale Unicorn Gundam in Odaiba is captured as a modern Buddha statue, and a close-up is drawn in the near view, and the night view of Oi Wharf across Tokyo Bay is drawn in the distant view. In the night sky, the space colony "Laplace" (an imaginary figure of Stanford Torus), which is a fictitious space colony that appears in the story of "Mobile Suit Gundam UC", is drawn. The Odaiba area in the distant view of Hiroshige's "Shinagawa Susaki," No.83 from "One hundred Famous Views of Edo", did not exist at that time. This is a view looking backward from Odaiba, which was created in modern times as reclaimed land, toward Oi (in the direction of Shinagawa Susaki).

Kudanzaka Ichigaya Silver
¥135,000
SOLD OUT
Year: 2022 Medium: Pigmented ink on silver paper Dimension: 30.9 x 21.6 x 0.3 cm / 12.2 x 8.5 x 0.1 in Edition: 8 Signature: Hand-signed by artist, back This work includes a certificate of authenticity, and black frame. Inspired by Hiroshige Utagawa The title means "Kudanzaka (from) Ichigaya (around the station) (facing)". With the theme of the road on the left side of Yasukuni Shrine (Yasukuni Dori) on the memorial of the end of the war, the out-of-season cherry blossoms are filled with condolences to the scattered ancestors. The Zero Fighter on the upper right is a little out of the frame, but we basically set the inside of the frame as this world and the outside of the frame as the everlasting world, and this Zero Fighter is drawn as a kind of spiritual existence. By adding the snow mark in the distant view, it suggests a transcendental mystery. Yasukuni Shrine was built for the war dead of the Boshin War, so it did not exist in the Hiroshige era. Therefore, the first generation of Hiroshige did not draw it, but the third generation of Hiroshige preferred to do so. For example, "Yasukuni Shrine on Kudanzaka".

Hinode no fukei Silver

SOLD OUT
Year: 2022 Medium: Pigmented ink on silver paper Dimension: 30.9 x 21.6 x 0.3 cm / 12.2 x 8.5 x 0.1 in Edition: 8 Signature: Hand-signed by artist, back This work includes a certificate of authenticity, and black frame. Inspired by Hiroshige Utagawa The theme is the Hinode (sunrise) pier in the vicinity of Hiroshige's "Shibaura Scenery", No.108 from "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". In 2019, a "drawing of a mouse believed to be a Banksy work" found near Hinode Station was protected by the government despite being illegal graffiti. EXCALIBUR was inspired by that sequence of events and removed the rats outside the frame of the Hinode Pier (or perhaps they escaped). Since Hiroshige's "Shiba-ura no fukei" depicts a Eurasian gull, this work depicts a new transit system, the Yurikamome.

Inspired by Hiroshige's "Azumabashi Kinryuyama distant view", No.39 from "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo", this work faces the west from the opposite bank of the Sumida River in the opposite direction of Hiroshige's composition. By drawing in this way, it is possible to draw the Metropolitan Expressway and the Tokyo Sky Tree, which were not in the Hiroshige era, while focusing on the Sumida River.

Inspired by Hiroshige Utagawa - "Tsuki no misaki" Inspired by Hiroshige's "Cape of the Moon," No.82 from "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo," the same composition depicts the fictional "Crown," a game center in Aso Juban that appears in the "Sailor Moon" story. Luna, the cat from Sailor Moon, is depicted behind the door, and the title of the work is a play on the name of Usagi Tsukino, the main character in Sailor Moon. Hiroshige painted Shinagawa, not the plateau in Minato Ward, which was called "Moon Cape" at the time. This work depicts the "Cape of the Moon" once again as Minato Ward.

Inspired by Hiroshige Utagawa Inspired by Hiroshige's "Asukayama kita no chōbō", No.17, and "Yushima Tenjin sakaue chōbō", N0.117 from "One hundred Famous Views of Edo", the artist depicted the view from the sky deck of Roppongi Hills as a bird's-eye view, which was not available in the Edo period. The large butterfly on the left is based on the artist's experience when he visited this location. The helipad on the Sky Deck is depicted in the close-up view, Tokyo Tower and Zojoji Temple in the middle view, and Tokyo Bay in the distance.

Inspired by Hiroshige's "Oji shozoku enoki Omisoka no kitsunebi" No.118 from "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". This work depicts the modern-day Oji Inari Shrine with the same composition and the same title as Hiroshige's "Oji Soshoku Enoki: Foxfire on New Year's Eve", No.108 (last) from "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". It depicts the same night scene of foxfire tradition on New Year's Eve (December 31) as Hiroshige's work. In the Edo period, foxes gathered around an enoki tree were depicted fantastically, but today there are no enoki trees, and foxes gathered around telegraph poles are depicted in a video-game-like manner. Oji Inari still watches over our lives as it always has.

Inspired by Hiroshige Utagawa This is the first work in the "Ukiyo.e" series published on the web in 2016. The title means "(from) the (near) Manseibashi (intersection) (in the near view) (overlooking) the (far) Onari-kaido Bridge (in the far view). The Chuo-dori in Akihabara(Akihabara Central Street) depicted in this painting was called Onari-kaido, because it was used by the Tokugawa shoguns during the Edo period (1603-1867) to pay homage to Kan'ei-ji (Tendai Buddhist temple) in Ueno. Onari means that the shoguns of high rank and others would go out in a parade-like procession. The name of the bridges on the street is a remnant of that name. Hiroshige depicted the procession of feudal lords near the present Manseibashi Bridge in "Sujikaiuchi Yatsukōji", No.9 from "One hundred Famous Views of Edo".

Inspired by Hiroshige Utagawa - "Asakusa Kinryuzan" This work depicts the present-day Sensoji Temple in the same composition as Hiroshige's "Asakusa Kinryuzan (The Kinryuzan Temple at Asakusa)", No.99 from "One Hundred Famous Views of Edo". In "Asakusa Kinryuzan" at that time, a wooden five-story pagoda was depicted on the right behind the gate, but it was later burned down many times and collapsed, and has now been relocated to the left in a concrete structure. The Nakamise (shopping street) leading from the Kaminarimon (Thunder Gate) in the foreground to the back of the picture is now one of the oldest shopping streets in Japan.
